Individual and couple therapy

Hello, my name is Roberta Richmond and I have been a practising therapist for the past 15 years, managing one of Belfast's largest counselling charities and a team of 30 counsellors, providing therapeutic services to the NHS. I am a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor and I am committed to providing therapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment.

Many of us have times in our lives when things seem too much, and we feel overwhelmed, with difficulty coping. If you’re reading this, you may be at that point yourself, and thinking about having some counselling. You may have hit a difficult patch in your relationship and are looking for a couple counsellor to help you and your partner sort things out, or you might be wondering whether you have a future together. Whatever your motivation, starting therapy is a big step to take, and it’s important for you to find a therapist you feel comfortable with.

I am a therapist who works with both individuals and couples on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

How I work

In my work as a therapist it is really important to me to make you feel at ease, so that you can use our therapy sessions to talk about whatever you need to. This means that throughout our sessions, I’ll be listening carefully to what you tell me, and gradually helping you to make sense of what you’re feeling. If we can understand ourselves better, we can find we have more choices about how to behave in our lives.

In my individual and relationship therapy work, I encourage you to speak freely and openly, as calmly and gently as possible. All couples disagree about things, and that need not matter, if we can disagree in a healthy way. It’s often helpful to think about how we express ourselves with our partner, the tone of voice, as well as the words we use, and to consider how we could best explain our point of view so that our partner can actually hear, and engage with, whatever we need them to know.

I am one of only a few Psychosexual Therapists based in Northern Ireland, having undertaken training at Tavistock Relationships London, internationally renowned for its advanced training and research, and an operational unit of the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology.

I have also undertaken training in sex addiction therapy with Paula Hall at The Laurel Centre and can offer sessions to support the individual, the partner and the couple. Many partners feel devastated when they discover that their partner has been unfaithful or viewing online porn and often it feels like there is no one to talk to, as a sex addiction counsellor much of the work I offer, is about supporting partners who are impacted.

While working as a therapist, I have helped many individuals with a wide range of issues, including trauma, depression, bereavement, addiction, anxiety, low self-esteem and abuse, and in my couples therapy sessions I provide a safe space for people to talk through their difficulties. I've taken additional training and have qualifications, as well as extensive experience in -

  • Relationships
  • Affair Recovery
  • Bereavement and Loss
  • Trauma
  • Sex and Porn Addiction
  • CBT, Mental Health and Wellness Coaching
  • Psychosexual Therapy

    Flexible Approach

I offer a flexible approach to sessions with many clients attending either weekly or fortnightly. Many of my clients work shift patterns, which mean their availability for sessions often changes on a weekly basis, and I'm happy to facilitate this in my practice. I feel it's important to make therapy as accessible as possible.
